Kissing the Bark

I was walking down
The street where I
Work, here in Portland,
And I see this woman–
She’s walking ahead of
Me, kissing every tree
She passed, literally;
Leaning in, embracing-
Pressing her lips against
The bark. And I
Could tell it was real
Love, because she listened
Just for a moment after.
This earthen woman,
Like the other children
Of Rose City: we treat our
Plants like people.
