War

When a nation’s leaders can’t sit down together without arguing, they waste billions of dollars sending swarms of poor people to kill the other nation’s poor people, until the leaders decide it’s time to try and talk again. Does that make any fucking sense to anyone?

          1. But how much weight do our votes have in the environment, where any government can be easily overthrown by violent means or where votes are routinely purchased and sold (e.g. like in Ukraine – see example at http://www.skepticaldoctor.com/2014/03/04/the-wisdom-of-a-ukrainian-plumber/)?

In more democratic environments people’s votes can also be easily ignored – as, for example, happened in NZ this year, where 67% of voters said NO to state assets sale, but were totally ignored by the current government.

Also, votes and people’s opinions can be so easily manipulated via mass media etc. – check out a few examples of such propaganda at http://otrazhenie.wordpress.com/2014/03/06/a-prayer-for-ukraine/ 😦

            1. It’s true, they trying to restrict the vote, but that’s a good sign, and things that happen like in NZ don’t happen everywhere, and I’m sure someone’s filed a lawsuit. That’s why I said, the better we educate people the better the vote, and more likely people are to make sure their vote is upheld.

              1. Lawsuit? You must be kidding. NZ is not USA. ;-)New Zealanders are patiently waiting for the next election to vote that government out.

With regard to countries like Ukraine, unfortunately, education alone is not enough. Have you read a book called ‘Why Nations Fail?” It provides a very good overview of why ‘votes’ in some countries have more weight than in others. Check it out – you can find a brief outline of the key ideas from this book at http://otrazhenie.wordpress.com/2014/02/16/how-to-end-poverty/ .
