The Desert Journey

the desert flame never dies

the black hole afar beckons

the valleys of sand voyage

rush between our toes

if only the wind would

carry us so as prose

the smoke rises sorely

the dawn’s greet is dismal

the mountain’s veiled mystery

keeps the litter away

but a boy crept out

to the mountain fog’s sway

the ascent he couldn’t account

the path around the top a point

the scorch and rock scratch

while wind and sky watched

as lighting struck a bough

that flaming tree botched

the boy laid there burning

the fire in a frenzy

the whisper from the wood

“the desert flame never dies”

as rain poured down

“the desert rain never dries”

as the boy’s heart burned

“the desert flame never dies”
